A Noninvasive Option for Treating Depression
Depression can be difficult to live with, especially when medications or other treatments haven’t provided enough relief.
For those with Major Depressive Disorder, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) offers a noninvasive, drug-free treatment option that is supported by clinical research and FDA-cleared for depression.
TMS uses focused magnetic stimulation to target brain regions involved in mood regulation. At Brain Treatment Center Plano, this therapy may be further refined through EEG-guided personalization, tailoring treatment to each patient’s brain activity.
For eligible patients, TRICARE may cover FDA-cleared TMS treatment for depression, based on diagnosis, medical necessity, and plan authorization. Coverage applies to standard TMS protocols and does not extend to personalized or off-label applications.
Our role is to help you understand your options, determine whether an evaluation is appropriate, and support you in deciding on the next step that makes sense for you.
What Is TMS for Depression?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment for Major Depressive Disorder that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation.
Unlike medication, TMS does not affect the entire body or alter brain chemistry systemically. It works by directly stimulating targeted brain regions that may be underactive in people with depression.
TMS is often recommended when:
- Depression has not improved with medication or therapy
- Medications caused unwanted side effects
- Symptoms persist despite multiple treatment attempts
Treatment is done while you are awake and seated comfortably. There is no anesthesia, no sedation, and no recovery time. Most patients return to normal activities immediately after each session.
TMS has been FDA-cleared for depression for over a decade and is the neuromodulation treatment that TRICARE may cover for qualifying patients, depending on diagnosis and authorization.
EEG-Guided rTMS: A More Personalized Approach
Because no two brains function exactly the same way, our clinic uses EEG-guided rTMS to personalize treatment when appropriate.
Before treatment begins, we perform a quantitative EEG (qEEG) to measure brainwave activity. This helps identify patterns—such as asymmetry or disrupted communication—that are commonly associated with depression.
Using this data, Dr. Miller can tailor aspects of TMS delivery, including stimulation frequency, target location, and adjustments during care.
By combining established TMS technology with advanced diagnostics, treatment can be more targeted and responsive to how an individual brain is functioning.
Meet Your Neurologist, Dr. Miller
Spencer O. Miller is the owner and Medical Director of the Brain Treatment Centers in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Plano. As a board-certified neurologist, he oversees all clinical care and treatment protocols at each location.
Dr. Miller spent five years serving as a physician in the U.S. Air Force, where he treated service members with traumatic brain injuries, PTSD, and other complex neurological conditions. That experience continues to inform his work with active-duty military members, veterans, and their families.
Today, Dr. Miller specializes in EEG-guided rTMS for conditions including depression, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia, autism, and other disorders involving disrupted brain function. His approach combines established neuromodulation technology with advanced diagnostics to guide individualized care.
After years of treating patients in Dallas, Dr. Miller expanded care to Fort Worth and Plano to make these services more accessible across North Texas.
You can feel confident knowing your care is guided by an experienced neurologist with deep clinical and military healthcare experience.
How TRICARE Coverage Works
Brain Treatment Center works with Humana Military–TRICARE East, which administers TRICARE plans including Prime, Select, and Reserve Select.
TRICARE may cover rTMS treatment for Major Depressive Disorder when specific medical criteria are met. Coverage is determined by diagnosis, prior treatment history, and plan authorization—not by the clinic alone.
You may be considered for TRICARE-covered rTMS if:
- You have active TRICARE coverage
- You have a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder
- Prior treatments have not provided adequate relief
- You do not have medical contraindications to treatment

Because coverage decisions vary by individual plan and clinical history, the most reliable way to determine eligibility is to speak with our New Patient Coordinator. She can explain the treatment process, review coverage considerations, and guide you through the next steps.

Patient Experiences
“I just finished six weeks of their specialized form of TMS treatment, and it is life changing. If your depression or anxiety has been resistant to medications, therapy, or other forms of treatment, I highly recommend the Brain Treatment Center.” – Mary Ann E.
“For me, depression was the constant feeling of, ‘I want to quit’ and retreat to my home, except I already would be home. TMS helped me shed this feeling in less than two weeks. I couldn’t believe I had spent so many years feeling this way!” – Verified Patient
“For anyone suffering from depression, anxiety, and other symptoms, I highly recommend trying TMS. My adult son, who has suffered from both problems his entire life and has been on medication, realized a positive change after the first visit. We saw dramatic improvement after each visit.” – Harold H.
