FAQs

Answers to Your Most Important Questions about MeRT for Autism Treatment

Choosing the right treatment for your child with autism can feel overwhelming. At the Brain Treatment Center Plano, we use a noninvasive approach called MeRT® that’s shown promising results in improving communication, behavior, and emotional regulation. Below, we’ve answered the most common questions families ask when considering MeRT.

If you don’t see your question here, we’re happy to help — contact us for a free consultation.

Understanding MeRT for Autism

What is MeRT treatment?

What is MeRT therapy?
MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is an emerging, noninvasive treatment that uses EEG brain mapping and magnetic stimulation with TMS to help optimize brain activity. It’s completely personalized based on each person’s brainwave patterns.

How is MeRT different from other therapies like TMS or neurofeedback?

Traditional TMS delivers the same stimulation to everyone, while MeRT tailors the treatment based on your child’s unique EEG. Unlike neurofeedback, which uses visual feedback, MeRT uses targeted magnetic pulses to help regulate brain activity.

Is MeRT safe for kids with autism spectrum disorder?

Yes. MeRT is drug-free and noninvasive. It’s been used successfully with children, teens, and adults, and is well-tolerated by most patients.

Is there a minimum age for MeRT treatment?

MeRT may be appropriate for children, teens, and adults with autism. Many parents explore this treatment for their children, especially when other therapies haven’t produced the desired results.

The best way to know if your child is a suitable candidate is through an initial consultation and EEG evaluation. Every child is unique, and our team weighs developmental stage, medical history, and brainwave patterns before recommending treatment.

Autism Treatment Process

What can we expect during the evaluation?

We start with a detailed qEEG and EKG to capture a detailed picture of brain activity and brain-heart coherence. This data guides the creation of a customized MeRT treatment plan based on your child’s unique brain patterns.

How long does the treatment plan typically take?

Most families complete treatment in about 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions held five days a week. Each session takes about 30–45 minutes.

Is the treatment painful or uncomfortable?

Not at all. Children may feel a gentle tapping on the scalp during stimulation, but it’s not painful. Many find sessions relaxing, and often parents tell us their child looks forward to coming in for their daily treatment.

Can I stay with my child during sessions?

Yes. We welcome parents to stay in the room and offer support throughout the process. We are all here to ensure your child gets the best, most caring treatment possible.

Can my child continue other therapies during MeRT?

Absolutely. MeRT can work well alongside therapies like speech, ABA, and occupational therapy. Many parents find that MeRT helps amplify the benefits of other treatments.

What to Expect

When will begin to notice progress?

Some families observe changes within the first few weeks, though every child is different. Improvements may include better sleep, focus, calmness, or more communication.

What improvements are possible with MeRT?

Parents have reported changes such as increased verbalization, better social interaction, improved emotional regulation, and more consistent behavior. Read some of their testimonials here.

Will the results last after the treatment ends?

MeRT encourages long-term brain changes. Some children may benefit from occasional follow-up sessions as they grow or reach new developmental stages.

What happens if we can’t complete the full program?

We understand that circumstances vary. If you need to pause or end treatment early, we’ll work with you to determine the best next steps.

Cost & Insurance

Does insurance cover MeRT for autism?

Unfortunately, we do not accept insurance nor file it on your behalf. However, we can provide CPT codes and a billing breakdown you may submit to your insurance.

For conditions other than Major Depressive Disorder and OCD (which are FDA-cleared), insurance rarely reimburses any of the costs associated with treatment.

What is the cost if insurance doesn’t cover it?

We provide a detailed cost breakdown after your child’s evaluation. Our New Patient Coordinator can also help provide cost information. Pricing varies depending on your child’s needs and treatment length.

Do you offer payment plans?

We do not, but we’ll work with you to make treatment as accessible as possible.

About Brain Treatment Plano

Why choose us for MeRT treatment for autism?

Our clinic specializes in personalized MeRT treatment for people with autism. We offer a calm, supportive environment and a team dedicated to your child’s success. Our goal is to provide real results through compassionate, expert care.

All treatment is overseen by Dr. Spencer Miller, a neurologist with many years of experience working with MeRT and a Trusted Autism Doctor.

Who is Dr. Spencer Miller?

Dr. Spencer O. Miller, a Neurologist in Dallas, Texas, is the owner and Medical Director of Brain Treatment Center Dallas. He has worked extensively with patients with ASD.

“Autism has a very specific EEG pattern that we’ve recognized in the past several years. A lot of learning difficulties stem from broken frontal lobes or broken language centers in the temporal lobes. And when we recognize that and correlate it with an EEG, we can then formulate a very specific plan for treatment of that patient. We have seen some very impressive results in the treatment of Autism with MeRT.”  – Dr. Miller

How do I get started?

The first step is a no-pressure phone consultation. From there, we’ll schedule your child’s EEG and discuss the best course of action.
