MeRT for Autism Treatment
FAQs

Answers to Your Most Important Questions about MeRT for Autism Treatment

Choosing the right treatment for your child with autism can feel overwhelming. At Brain Treatment Center Plano, we offer a non-invasive, brain-based treatment called MeRT®, a personalized form of EEG-guided rTMS, designed to support healthier brain communication. Below, we’ve answered the most common questions families ask when considering MeRT treatment for autism.

If you don’t see your question here, we’re happy to help. Contact us for a free consultation.

Understanding MeRT for Autism

What is MeRT treatment?

MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is an emerging, non-invasive treatment that uses EEG brain mapping to guide repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Treatment is fully personalized based on each individual’s brainwave patterns.

How is MeRT different from other therapies like TMS or neurofeedback?

Traditional rTMS often uses standardized settings, while MeRT customizes stimulation based on your child’s EEG findings. Unlike neurofeedback, which relies on visual or auditory feedback, MeRT uses targeted magnetic stimulation to directly influence brain activity.

Is MeRT safe for kids with autism spectrum disorder?

Yes. MeRT is drug-free and non-invasive, and has been used with children, teens, and adults. Most patients tolerate treatment well, and sessions are closely monitored by our medical team.

Is there a minimum age for MeRT treatment?

MeRT may be appropriate for children, teens, and adults with autism. The best way to determine suitability is through an initial consultation and EEG evaluation, where we consider developmental stage, medical history, and brainwave patterns.

Autism Treatment Process

What can we expect during the evaluation?

We begin with a qEEG and EKG, which provide insight into brain activity and brain–heart communication. This information guides the development of a customized EEG-guided rTMS (MeRT) treatment plan.

How long does the treatment plan typically take?

Most families complete treatment over 4 to 6 weeks, with sessions held five days per week. Each session typically lasts 30–45 minutes.

Is the treatment painful or uncomfortable?

No. Children may feel a gentle tapping sensation on the scalp during stimulation, but treatment is not painful. Many children find sessions relaxing.

Can I stay with my child during sessions?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay with their child throughout treatment. Our team is here to support both you and your child every step of the way.

Can my child continue other therapies during MeRT?

Yes. MeRT treatment can be used alongside therapies such as ABA, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. Many families find that supporting brain function helps their child engage more effectively in other therapies.

What to Expect

When will we begin to notice progress?

Some families notice changes during treatment, while others observe gradual shifts over time. Every child responds differently.

What improvements are possible with MeRT?

Parents have reported changes such as improved communication, emotional regulation, focus, sleep, and social engagement. Individual results vary.

Read some of their testimonials here.

Will the results last after the treatment ends?

MeRT is designed to support long-term brain changes. Some individuals may benefit from follow-up or maintenance sessions as they grow or reach new developmental stages.

What happens if we can’t complete the full program?

We understand that circumstances vary. If treatment needs to be paused or discontinued, our team will help you determine appropriate next steps.

Cost & Insurance

Does insurance cover MeRT for autism?

Unfortunately, we do not accept insurance nor file it on your behalf. However, we can provide CPT codes and a billing breakdown you may submit to your insurance.

For conditions other than Major Depressive Disorder and OCD (which are FDA-cleared), insurance rarely reimburses any of the costs associated with treatment.

What is the cost if insurance doesn’t cover it?

We provide a detailed cost breakdown after your child’s evaluation. Our New Patient Coordinator can also help provide cost information. Pricing varies depending on your child’s needs and treatment length.

Do you offer payment plans?

We do not, but we’ll work with you to make treatment as accessible as possible.

About Brain Treatment Plano

Why choose us for MeRT treatment for autism?

Our Plano clinic focuses on personalized EEG-guided rTMS (MeRT) treatment in a calm, supportive environment. All care is overseen by a medical team experienced in brain-based autism treatment.

Who is Dr. Spencer Miller?

Dr. Spencer O. Miller, a Neurologist in Dallas, Texas, is the owner and Medical Director of Brain Treatment Centers Plano, Dallas, and Fort Worth. He has extensive experience working with individuals on the autism spectrum using EEG-guided rTMS.

“Autism has a very specific EEG pattern that we’ve recognized in the past several years. A lot of learning difficulties stem from broken frontal lobes or broken language centers in the temporal lobes. And when we recognize that and correlate it with an EEG, we can then formulate a very specific plan for treatment of that patient. We have seen some very impressive results in the treatment of Autism with MeRT.”  – Dr. Miller

How do I get started?

The first step is a no-pressure phone consultation. From there, we’ll schedule your child’s EEG and discuss whether MeRT treatment may be appropriate.
