Autism Treatments
Many treatments exist to benefit those with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
MeRT® may help these treatments work better.
Autism Treatments are as Individual as ASD itself.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is individual, with each person having a distinct set of strengths and challenges. This complex developmental condition can present challenges in social interaction, speech and nonverbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviors.
However, if you have a child on the spectrum, you know that the range and severity of autism symptoms can vary widely. That’s why autism treatments should be tailored to meet each child’s individual needs.
Per the National Institutes of Health: “There is currently no one standard treatment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). But there are many ways to help minimize the symptoms and maximize abilities. People who have ASD have the best chance of using all of their abilities and skills if they receive appropriate therapies and interventions.”
Many therapies and treatments exist to treat ASD. And MeRT® can be used along with each of them, often improving their effectiveness.
What are the Most Common Autism Treatments?
While ASD is not currently curable, many interventions exist. These treatments are aimed at symptom management, skill enhancement, and functional improvement. Here are some of the most common treatments:
Communication and Behavior Strategies
- ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis): This common approach for ASD focuses on increasing positive behaviors and diminishing negative ones through reinforcement techniques, enhancing social, communicative, and learning abilities.
- TEACCH Program: Emphasizing visual instruction, TEACCH uses tools like picture cards to simplify tasks into manageable steps, aiding in skill acquisition, such as dressing.
- Speech and Language Therapy: This therapy aims to bolster communication abilities, utilizing methods like picture symbols, sign language, or direct speech training.
Skill Development Therapies
- Occupational Therapy: Focused on everyday skills like dressing, eating, and personal interaction, this therapy aims to improve daily living capabilities.
- Physical Therapy: Targeting motor skills and physical strength, this therapy also addresses sensory issues often associated with ASD.
Relational and Social Techniques
- DIR/Floortime Approach: This technique concentrates on emotional and relational growth by interacting with children at their developmental stage and leveraging their strengths.
- Group Social Skills Training: This training helps children enhance their interactive abilities with peers, which is why it’s usually conducted in group settings.
Additional Methods
- Dietary Modifications: Due to possible food sensitivities or allergies in ASD individuals, specific diets like gluten-free or casein-free may be recommended.
- Medication: Although not a cure, medications can alleviate ASD symptoms. Antipsychotics might be used for behavioral challenges, and antidepressants for anxiety.
- Alternative Therapies: Interventions like music, art, or animal therapy are sometimes beneficial in fostering communication and social skills.
Autism Treatment with MeRT
Autism treatments usually focus on specific symptoms, using therapy, education, or medication. But our MeRT (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) offers a fresh approach to Autism treatment by using magnetic stimulation to open up unused or under-used areas of the brain.
What makes MeRT unique? It’s a gentle, non-invasive way to stimulate the brain using an advanced form of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation).
We start with a detailed map of the brain’s activity using a qEEG. Unlike traditional treatments that target symptoms, MeRT looks for irregular brainwave patterns that could be causing certain symptoms. Then, we focus on those specific areas to improve brain function.
The main goal? To boost communication skills, behavior, and thinking abilities by getting brainwaves back in sync. This can help reduce symptoms, sometimes more effectively than other treatments.
Plus, MeRT can make other therapies work better since the brain is functioning better. This offers a more complete solution for those with ASD.
How MeRT May Improve the Effectiveness of Other Treatments
MeRT is tailored to each person’s unique brain activity. It can be used with other therapies to improve their success. Here’s a look at how MeRT might help with different ASD treatments:
- Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA): MeRT may improve brain flexibility, making kids more open to ABA methods and boosting their learning.
- DIR/Floortime: MeRT could help children engage more in emotional and social interactions, enhancing the Floortime approach.
- TEACCH: Improved brain function from MeRT may help children process visual cues better, making TEACCH methods more effective.
- Dietary Approaches: Although MeRT doesn’t directly affect food sensitivities, better brain function and symptom reduction might support overall health.
- Medication: MeRT may improve brain health, possibly reducing the need for medication or making it work better.
- Occupational Therapy: With MeRT, motor skills and sensory processing might improve, boosting the benefits of occupational therapy and making it easier to learn new skills.
- Speech Therapy: MeRT could improve brain areas linked to language, potentially making speech therapy more effective.
- Physical Therapy: MeRT may enhance coordination and muscle control, complementing physical therapy efforts.
- Social Skills Training: Improved brain function in key areas for social interaction might make social skills training more effective.
- Specialized Therapies (Music, Art, Animal Therapy): MeRT could improve sensory processing and emotional response, making these creative therapies more impactful.
MeRT may help your child get even more out of other autism treatments!
